# Winter running socks

Your feet stay warm on most winter runs as long as they stay dry. Merino blends handle sweat and slush far better than cotton, and a little more cushion and height helps in deep cold. Waterproof socks are for slush and wet snow.

## Quick picks

- **Best for cold runs:** [Smartwool Run Cold Weather Crew Socks (Targeted Cushion)](https://agenticrecs.com/products/smartwool-run-cold-weather-crew-socks/), $24. Crew-height merino with targeted cushioning. 220 Triathlon found it very warm, even when damp.
- **Best for slush:** [Showers Pass Cross Point Waterproof Socks: Sport](https://agenticrecs.com/products/showers-pass-cross-point-waterproof-socks-sport/), $52. A waterproof, breathable membrane sock for puddles and wet snow.
- **Best toe sock:** [Injinji Run Lightweight Crew](https://agenticrecs.com/products/injinji-run-lightweight-crew/), $17. iRunFar's best toe sock, at $17 the cheapest pair here. Also works as a liner under a warmer sock.
- **Best guarantee:** [Darn Tough Stride Micro Crew Ultra-Lightweight Running Sock](https://agenticrecs.com/products/darn-tough-stride-micro-crew-ultra-lightweight/), $22. A thin merino sock covered by Darn Tough's lifetime guarantee.

## How to choose

- Pick merino-blend running socks and skip cotton, which stays wet.
- Crew or quarter heights cover the gap between your tights and your shoes.
- Don't go so thick that your shoes get tight. A squeezed foot gets cold.
- Waterproof socks keep slush out but trap sweat, so save them for wet days.
- Toe socks prevent blisters between the toes for some runners.

### Smartwool Run Cold Weather Crew Socks (Targeted Cushion)

$24 list · Unisex, Women's · Midweight · Best for cold runs

Smartwool's winter running sock adds crew height and merino warmth to its targeted-cushion design. 220 Triathlon found it very warm and comfortable, and still warm when damp, but pricey.

- **Best for:** Below-freezing road or trail runs, especially in tights, where crew height protects the ankle gap.
- **Not for:** Mild-weather runs, or slush where a waterproof sock is needed.
- **Downsides:** Costs more than basic running socks; Too warm for mild days; Not waterproof

### Showers Pass Cross Point Waterproof Socks: Sport

$52 list · Unisex · Midweight · Best for slush

Showers Pass's athletic waterproof sock puts a breathable membrane between a knit outer and a terry-cushioned CoolMax liner to keep feet dry in puddles and slush. Treeline's waterproof-sock test covered related Cross Point models, not this one.

- **Best for:** Runs through slush, puddles and wet snow, when shoes are sure to get soaked.
- **Not for:** Dry cold or warm days, when a membrane sock adds bulk and traps heat.
- **Downsides:** Expensive for a sock; Stiffer, less stretchy than a normal sock (Treeline, on related models); No independent review of this exact variant found

### Injinji Run Lightweight Crew

$17 list · Unisex · Light · Best toe sock

Injinji's thin five-toe running sock, iRunFar's best toe sock, cuts down on blisters between the toes at a low price. The toe-pocket fit doesn't suit every foot.

- **Best for:** Blister-prone runners on a budget, and as a thin liner under a warmer or waterproof sock in winter.
- **Not for:** Runners with very short or unusually shaped toes, or anyone wanting a warm sock on its own in deep cold.
- **Downsides:** Toe-sleeve fit isn't for everyone; Thin synthetic knit offers little warmth on its own; No cushioning

### Darn Tough Stride Micro Crew Ultra-Lightweight Running Sock

$22 list · Men's, Women's · Light · Best guarantee

A thin, no-cushion merino running sock backed by Darn Tough's lifetime guarantee. iRunFar's testers found it comfortable and odor-resistant but missed sole padding.

- **Best for:** Runners who want a durable, low-bulk merino sock that covers the ankle under tights and lasts for years.
- **Not for:** Anyone wanting underfoot cushioning or a warm sock for deep cold.
- **Downsides:** No sole cushioning; Fits slightly large, per REI shoppers

### Smartwool Run Ankle Socks (Targeted Cushion)

$21 list · Unisex · Light

A light, targeted-cushion merino ankle sock that topped 220 Triathlon's 2026 test and was iRunFar's best ankle sock. Testers found it soft, secure and odor-resistant, though some wore holes in it sooner than in rivals.

- **Best for:** Year-round road running, including crisp fall days, for runners who like a thin merino sock with a little padding.
- **Not for:** Slushy or deep-cold runs, where an ankle sock leaves skin exposed below the tights.
- **Downsides:** Some testers saw holes sooner than with other picks (iRunFar); Can feel warm in midsummer; Ankle height leaves a gap in winter
